Animals and Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority Animals & NVWA

Importing animals and animal products requires strict EU compliance. Discover how Schiphol ensures efficient, safe handling with specialized facilities and cooperation with the NVWA.
When importing live animals, meat, fish and goods with animal components, specific European Union laws and regulations must be complied with. This applies, among other things, to certain medicines for humans and animals, as well as breeding animals, for example horses and bulls.
Schiphol has several of these inspection stations, which are equipped to carry out careful inspections and ensure compliance with these regulations.
Schiphol cooperates with the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority to ensure continuous optimisation of the overall transhipment process.
A separate facility is available for animals transported by air. This can be done both via Schiphol and Maastricht. When transporting high-value animals, such as race and dressage horses, a specialised animal keeper usually travels with the animals to ensure their welfare during the journey.
